Raleigh, North Carolina is quoted from many national publications as one of the best places to live in the United States. The area is also well known it's high standard of education, with nationally ranking high school education as well as top notch universities such as North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - all of which boast a legacy of excellence in ACC Sports on top of their fine academic programs.

To do Before Moving

One Month Before Moving:

  • Make truck rental reservation or arrangement with a moving company.
  • Gather moving supplies - boxes, tape (not masking tape), rope.
  • Make long distance travel arrangements (airline, hotel, rental car reservations, or plan your travel route if driving.
  • Save moving receipts - may moving expenses are tax deductible.

Notify the Following of Your Move:

  • Family members, friends, business, schools
  • Banks, insurance companies, credit card companies
  • Doctors, dentists, veterinarian, and other service providers
  • State and Federal tax authorities, Social Security office, and any other government agencies as needed. (To obtain an IRS change of address form, call 1-800-829-3676)

Two Weeks Before Moving:

  • Inform utility companies of the upcoming account changes; select and notify long distance carrier for new address.
  • Recruit moving day help.
  • Confirm travel reservations
  • Arrange to close or transfer bank accounts as appropriate.
  • Obtain change of address form; complete, and submit to local post office.
  • Cancel services; newspapers, lawn care, bottles water, diaper delivery.

The Day Before Moving:

  • Set aside moving materials, like tape measures, pocket knife, rope.
  • Pick up rental truck.
  • Check oil and gas in your car. (f traveling, make sure you have tickets, charge cards, and a phone card.)

To do After Moving

During the first Week After Moving:

  • Mail that has been forwarded from your old address will have a yellow address label on it. Notify the sender of the new address.

  • Register to vote. Call your local board of elections for specific registration information. Ask them how to notify your previous voting district of your change of address.

  • If you have moved into a different state, contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to exchange your driver's license.

  • Call the Department of Sanitation to find out which day the trash is collected. Also ask whether your new community has recycling programs.

  • Call your local Chamber of Commerce for helpful information on:
    • Schools
    • Cable services
    • Cultural events and community activities
    • Libraries and parks
    • Availability of emergency calling services, such as 911

  • Provide your new doctor and dentist with your medical history. You may have to request your file from your previous doctor/dentist.

  • Transfer insurance policies to an agent in your community. You may also wish to make a detailed list of your belongings, their value, and your coverage.

  • Give your new home a good cleaning.

  • Scout your new neighborhood for shopping area. You may need furniture, tools, or house wares unexpectedly.

  • Seek out new service providers such as a bank, cleaners, Veterinarian.

  • Locate the hospital as well as police and fire stations near your home.

  • Moving can be stressful. Be sure to monitor the effects of your recent move on your family.
